Danish Beer Company Could Soon Sell Paper Beer Bottles
Danish beer company Carlsberg says they have created the worlds first ‘paper bottle’ for beer, made from sustainable sourced wood fibers.
The new sustainable bottles will still have traditional beer labels.
The beer manufacturer revealed its Green Fibre bottle at a European Green Environmental tradeshow in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The green tradeshow is called the C40 Mayors Summit In Copenhagen. The Carlsberg beer company attended the tradeshow as part of the companies goal to end carbon emissions at it’s breweries and reduce their carbon footprint by 2030.
Proto Type Beer Paper Bottles
"While we are not completely there yet, the two prototypes are an important step towards realizing our ultimate ambition of bringing this breakthrough to market," Myriam Shingleton says, Vice President of Group Development at the Carlsberg beer company. She adds, "Innovation takes time and we will continue to collaborate with leading experts in order to overcome remaining technical challenges, just as we did with our plastic-reducing Snap Pack.”
The paper bottle community is not stopping with Carlsberg beer, Coca-Cola, L’Oréal, and Vodka maker Absolut have also joined the paper bottle innovation.
The company also touts that the paper bottles are fully recyclable in a tweet on Twitter.
"Partnerships such as these, ones that are united by a desire to create sustainable innovations, are the best way to bring about real change,” Shingleton said.
Carlsberg revealed two paper bottle prototypes, which both have a thin polymer plastic based barrier. One paper bottle has a recycled PET film barrier and the other has a ‘bio based’ PEF polymer film barrier. The beer company said the barriers are still being tested but the goal is to create a 100% bio based paper bottle without polymers.
The paper bottles are still in a proto type stage, and the company has not released any news on when the paper beer bottles will be on your local grocery store shelves.
The ‘Snap Pack’ Replaces Plastic for Glue
Last year In 2018 the beer manufacturer also invented a new 6 pack that uses less plastic, and is more safe for animal life in the ocean if it is not recycled.
The new ‘Snap pack’ beverage 6 pack uses a new design of only one rectangle strap label, compared to the old 6 rings of plastic that holds the can. The secret is that the cans are glued together at the bottom of the can.
Just pull apart, and drink.
The reason? To cut plastic waste. Carlsberg knowns consumers are becoming more sustainably conscious.
